In early winter in Changsha, the sky is clear and the clouds are ethereal. In a corner of Yuelu Academy by the Xiang River, Peter Ditmanson is having the weekly English Corner activity with his students. From academic issues to interesting things in life, the teacher and students talk freely without any reserve.

這是美籍教授戴彼得來湖南大學岳麓書院任教的第六年,。就在今年9月30日,，2024年度中國政府友誼獎頒獎儀式在人民大會堂隆重舉行，戴彼得是獲獎者之一,。

This is the sixth year that American Professor Peter Ditmanson has been teaching at Yuelu Academy of Hunan University. On September 30 this year, the awarding ceremony of the 2024 Chinese Government Friendship Award was grandly held in the Great Hall of the People, and Peter Ditmanson was one of the recipients.

接受記者專訪的那天,，戴彼得身著白襯衫，身后的典籍襯得他越顯儒雅,、穩(wěn)重：“榮獲2024年度中國政府友誼獎,，我深感榮幸與感動，但這也是一個巨大的責任,，我還有更多的事要做,。”他說,。

On the day of the exclusive interview with the reporters, Peter Ditmanson was dressed in a white shirt. The ancient books behind him made him look even more refined and steady. "I'm deeply honored and touched to have won the 2024 Chinese Government Friendship Award. However, it also means a huge responsibility. There are still more things for me to do." he said.

教中國史的外國人

A foreigner who teaches Chinese history

中國政府友誼獎是中國政府為表彰在中國現(xiàn)代化建設和改革開放事業(yè)中作出突出貢獻的外國專家而設立的最高獎項,。

The Chinese Government Friendship Award is the highest award established by the Chinese government to recognize foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to China's modernization drive and reform and opening-up undertakings.

戴彼得因長期致力于中華優(yōu)秀傳統(tǒng)文化的創(chuàng)造性轉化、創(chuàng)新性發(fā)展及高等教育實踐,，并在中華文化“走出去”方面作出了突出貢獻,，成為100名獲獎外國專家之一,。

Peter Ditmanson has become one of the 100 award-winning foreign experts due to his long-term commitment to the creative transformation and innovative development of outstanding traditional Chinese culture, as well as higher education practice, and his outstanding contributions to the "going global" of Chinese culture.

其實，他與中國的緣分自其祖輩時便開始,。

In fact, his connection with China began as early as the time of his grandparents.

20世紀初,，戴彼得的祖父母來到中國，參與了北五省賑災,，獲時任湖廣總督趙爾巽贈禮,；1945年至1948年，其父親在聯(lián)合國救濟和復興總署工作,，選擇留在中國張家口進行田野調查,，從而獲得葉劍英致聶榮臻的親筆許可證。

In the early 20th century, Peter Ditmanson's grandparents came to China and participated in the disaster relief work in the five northern provinces. They received gifts from Zhao Erxun, who was the governor of Hubei and Hunan province at that time. From 1945 to 1948, his father worked in the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration and chose to stay in Zhangjiakou, China to conduct field investigations, and obtained the handwritten permit from Ye Jianying to Nie Rongzhen.

“祖輩與父輩的經(jīng)歷,，描摹著我對中國的最初印象,。”先后畢業(yè)于明尼蘇達州大學與哈佛大學的戴彼得,，擁有文學學士,、文學碩士學位和歷史學博士學位，曾任北美明代研究學會秘書長,、英國牛津大學高級研究員,，主要研究領域為明史。

"The experiences of my grandparents and parents sketched my initial impressions of China." Peter Ditmanson, who graduated successively from the University of Minnesota and Harvard University, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Master of Arts degree, and a Doctor of History degree. He once served as the Secretary-General of the North American Ming Dynasty Studies Society and a senior research fellow at the University of Oxford in the UK. His main research area is the history of the Ming Dynasty.

對中國歷史文化天然的親近感,，讓他與長沙結下了不解之緣,。

The natural sense of affinity for Chinese history and culture has forged an indissoluble bond between him and Changsha.

2017年5月,，戴彼得受邀來到岳麓書院演講,，書院的國際化和多元化給他留下了深刻印象。2018年12月,，他正式來到湖南大學岳麓書院工作,。

In May 2017, Peter Ditmanson was invited to give a speech at Yuelu Academy. The internationalization and diversification of the academy left a deep impression on him. In December 2018, he officially started working at Yuelu Academy of Hunan University.

推動湖湘文化影響世界

Promote the influence of Hunan Culture worldwide

接受采訪時，戴彼得用中文回答了所有問題,，稍有“卡殼”,，他便停下來，想清楚了再繼續(xù)回答,。

During the interview, Peter Ditmanson answered all the questions in Chinese. Whenever he got a bit "stuck", he would stop and continue after thinking clearly.

中英切換自如的他,，很受學生歡迎?！按鹘淌跒槿擞H切,、說話幽默，是位‘知無不言,、言無不盡’的好老師,。”學生于儲銘說,。

He is very popular among students as he can effortlessly switch between English and Chinese. "Professor Peter Ditmanson is amiable and humorous. He is a great teacher who 'holds nothing back and speaks his mind'," said his student Yu Chuming.

開設課程內容豐富、形式有趣……作為教授,，他在岳麓書院的“主線”教學工作十分成功,。

The courses he offers are rich in content and interesting in form. As a professor, his "mainline" work- teaching at Yuelu Academy is highly successful.

但于戴彼得而言，他的“副線”工作同樣重要,。

積極推動國際學術交流與合作,，搭建高水平對話平臺；

He actively promoted international academic exchanges and cooperation, and built a high-level dialogue platform;

促成岳麓書院和牛津大學皇后學院手稿與文獻中心合辦的“中國思想的物質性會議”等高水平研討會,；

contributed to the conference “Materiality of Knowledge in Chinese Thought: Past and Present” jointly organized by Yuelu Academy and the Bodleian Library of Oxford's Queen's College and other high-level seminars;

成立“岳麓書院口述史”課題小組,，采訪收錄數(shù)位教職工口述資料近20萬字，再現(xiàn)岳麓書院現(xiàn)代復興的崢嶸歲月,；

“In the past two years, Yuelu Academy has also actively implemented a visiting scholar program, inviting around 20 well-known scholars from both at home and abroad to visit Yuelu Academy each year, and using the ‘Yuelu Academy Lectures’ as an academic exchange platform to invite renowned scholars from around the world to give lectures,” Zhan said.

Feeling at home in Changsha

承朱張之緒,，取歐美之長的岳麓書院講壇,，一千多年來始終未變，時至今日依舊敞開胸懷,，接納博學鴻儒,。

Following the footsteps of Zhu Xi and Zhang Shi and adopting the strengths of western culture, the Yuelu Academy Lectures has remained unchanged for over a thousand years, and it is still open today to welcome learned scholars from all over the world.

對于這位跨越萬里而來的學者，岳麓書院,、湖南大學和這座城市給予了滿分的熱忱和支持,，這份溫馨感與歸屬感讓戴彼得快速融入長沙的生活。

For Peter Ditmanson, who traveled thousands of miles, Yuelu Academy, Hunan University, and even Changsha City have shown full hospitality and support. This has given him a warm and welcoming feeling of belonging and allowed him to quickly adapt to life in Changsha.

記得有一次,，戴彼得不小心摔傷,，岳麓書院的老師們忙前忙后幫助他；在病房里,，他也很快地和“室友”無話不說,，“我們一起吃藥一起治療互幫互助，他們忘記了我是外國人,，因為那時候,，我們都是受傷的長沙人?！彼f起時哈哈大笑,。

Once, Peter Ditmanson accidentally fell and injured himself, and the teachers at Yuelu Academy rushed to help him. On the ward, he quickly became very close to his "roommate" and talked about everything. "We took medicine together, got treatment together, and helped each other. They forgot that I was a foreigner because at that time, we were all injured Changsha people," he laughed.

閑暇時間,，戴彼得喜歡去長沙街頭巷尾感受厚重與新潮交織的新奇感,；他還會一邊在湘江邊跑步，一邊欣賞這座城市的獨特風景,，時不時與長沙老口子交流互動,，順便學幾句有意思的長沙話；從辣椒炒肉到剁椒魚頭,，各式各樣的湖南菜讓他從“不吃辣”到“怕不辣”,。

In his spare time, Peter Ditmanson likes to explore the streets and alleys of Changsha to feel the unique blend of history and modernity. He also enjoys running along the Xiangjiang River and taking in the city's distinct scenery, occasionally interacting with local residents and picking up a few interesting phrases of Changsha dialect. From Hunan cuisine classics like Stir-fried Pork with Chili Peppers and Steamed Fish Head with Chopped Chili, he has gone from "not eating spicy food" to "can’t live without spicy food."

如今的戴彼得，儼然是個地道的長沙人,。

Today, Peter Ditmanson has become a true local of Changsha.

“The communication with students, colleagues, and friends, the warm friendship of the Hunan people, and the inclusive Hunan culture have all left a deep impression on me,” said Peter Ditmanson. Entering this city, he has truly realized that "even though people from distant lands are far apart, we are all under the same sky."
